While they were acquaintances at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Florence Knoll requested Saarinen to design a more comfortable, dynamic lounge chair in 1946. The design goal of the womb chair was the ability to sit in several different comfortable positions. The original name for the chair was No. 70, but after it was designed and it proved to allow so many different comfortable positions within its organic form, it was named after the womb. The chair quickly became a midcentury modern classic and an icon throughout the world.
